oxford. in october 2003, i took a place as a probationer research student in modern history at christ church, one of the thirty-nine colleges which make up oxford university. i intend to remain there for three years, pursuing an MSt in historical research and a DPhil in modern history. my research is on areas in early modern london called liberties. liberties were districts exempt from many forms of local government on account of their having been the sites of religious houses until the henrician dissolutions of the 1530s. the franchises of the monasteries reverted, with the land, to the crown. when the crown subsequently sold off the land, the associated rights were transferred as well. as i complete my work, i'll try to put it up here, as formatting permits. stoopid footnotes. written work, by term submitted, with length.
